'Slipped disc' is a term that is commonly used but is also inaccurate. Spinal discs are in between each vertebral segment in the spine. These discs cushion the joints of your spine and provide much-needed support. Over time, these discs lose their hydration and begin to wear. As they wear, small tears occur in the fibres surrounding the jelly like center which can cause a herniation. Subsequently, this herniation can then cause nerve compression and associated neurological symptoms such as tingling, numbness, weakness and pain into the lower limb.
'True herniation' is, however, relatively rare and only makes up around 1-3% of all lower back pain cases.
Chiropractic treatment can be effective on increasing the mobility of the spine and reducing the pressure on the relevant discs.
